Closed Captions for Stream Video Media

Note

All of these directions presume that you have successfully logged into your Millersville Microsoft 365 account.

Add Captions Generated by Stream Captioning

  1. Navigate to the Stream start page within Microsoft 365
  2. Locate and select the video to which you want to add captions
  3. Click "Video Settings" from the options to the right of the video
  4. Click "Transcript and captions" to expand options
  5. Verify the Spoken Language dropdown is set the correct language
  6. Click "Generate".
  7. A time remaining display will appear under Transcript and captions heading. Captions are automatically enabled for the video once the captioning is complete. The "Upload" button is not used in this process to auto-generate captions.


Microsoft Stream will not generate captions for video files greater than 4 GB in size.

Edit Captions Generated by Stream Captioning

  1. Navigate to the Stream start page within Microsoft 365
  2. Locate and select the video to which you want to edit captions previously generated by Stream
  3. Click "Transcript" from the options to the right of the video. The time-stamped transcription panel will expand.
  4. Hover over any block of text in the transcription to see and then select "Edit"
  5. Make any changes needed to auto captions
  6. Click "Done". Edits to transcription are instantly enabled on video playback.

Upload an Existing Captions File to Stream 

Microsoft Stream only accepts captions files in WebVTT (.vtt) format. If your captions file is in another format, you will need to convert the file to the proper format.

  1. Navigate to the Stream start page within Microsoft 365
  2. Locate and select the video for which you want to upload captions.
  3. Click "Video Settings" from the options to the right of the video.
  4. Click "Transcript and captions" to expand options.
  5. Click the "Upload" button.
  6. If the language in your captions file is not English, select the correct language from the Language drop-down list.
  7. Click the "Select file" button.
  8. Choose your .vtt captions file.
  9. Click the "Done" button.

Convert a Captions file into WebVTT (.vtt) format

  1. Open the Subtitle Converter web page: https://gotranscript.com/subtitle-converter
  2. In the Upload Files column of the web page, click the "Upload" button.
  3. Choose your .srt or .dfxp captions file.
  4. In the Select Format column of the web page, choose "WebVTT (.vtt)".
  5. In the Get Files column of the web page, click the "Convert" button.
  6. Save the .vtt file to your computer.

Download the Captions file from a Stream Video

  1. Navigate to the Stream start page within Microsoft 365
  2. Locate and select the video from which you want to download the captions file.
  3. Click "Transcript" from the options to the right of the video playback frame to expand the transcript window.
  4. Click "Download" just above transcript panel
  5. Select "Download as .vtt"
