How do I connect a course discussion, assignment or quiz to Grades?
These instructions assume you have already logged in to D2L and entered the course in which you wish to work.
An activity can only be connected to a "Numeric" type grade item to which a rubric has not already been attached.
Associate a Discussion Topic to a Grade item
- Click "Communication"in the navigation bar.
- Select "Discussions" from the menu that opens.
- Locate the topic you would like associated with a grade item. Click the down arrow ( ) button next to the topic name.
- Select "Edit Topic" from the menu that opens.
- Under "Grade Out of", fill in the number of points the discussion will be scored out of. If "ungraded" is recorded in the field, click the field to enter a number.
- Click text "Not in Grade Book "
- Choose the desired option
- Click "Edit or Link to Existing" if you have already created a Grade Item at Grades that you wish to associate the discussion to
- on the pop up window that appears fill in the second bubble to "Link to an existing grade item"
- on the dropdown menu that appears select the desired grade item
- click "OK" button on the pop up window
- Click "Add to Grade Book" to have D2L create a new Grade Item and automatically associate the discussion to the new item.
- Click "Edit or Link to Existing" if you have already created a Grade Item at Grades that you wish to associate the discussion to
- Click the "Save and Close" button.
If you use categories at Grades you will need to navigate to grades and edit the new grade item to be included in the appropriate category.
Associate an Assignment to a Grade item
- Click "Assessment"in the navigation bar.
- Select "Assignments" from the menu that opens.
- Locate the assignment you would like associated with a grade item. Click the down arrow ( ) button next to the topic name.
- Select "Edit Assignment" from the menu that opens.
- Under "Grade Out of", fill in the number of points the assignment will be scored out of. If "ungraded" is recorded in the field, click the field to enter a number.
- Click text "Not in Grade Book "
- Choose the desired option
- Click "Edit or Link to Existing" if you have already created a Grade Item at Grades that you wish to associate the assigment to
- on the pop up window that appears fill in the second bubble to "Link to an existing grade item"
- on the dropdown menu that appears select the desired grade item
- click "OK" button on the pop up window
- Click "Add to Grade Book" to have D2L create a new Grade Item and automatically associate the discussion to the new item.

- Click the "Save and Close" button.

Associate a Quiz to a Grade item
- Click "Assessment"in the navigation bar.
- Select "Quizzes" from the menu that opens.
- Locate the quiz you would like associated with a grade item. Click the down arrow ( ) button next to the quiz name.
- Select "Edit" from the menu that opens.
- Click text "Not in Grade Book "
- Choose the desired option
- Click "Edit or Link to Existing" if you have already created a Grade Item at Grades that you wish to associate the quiz to
- on the pop up window that appears fill in the second bubble to "Link to an existing grade item"
- on the dropdown menu that appears select the desired grade item
- click "OK" button on the pop up window
- Click "Add to Grade Book" to have D2L create a new Grade Item and automatically associate the quiz to the new item.
- Click "Edit or Link to Existing" if you have already created a Grade Item at Grades that you wish to associate the quiz to
- Click Save and Close" button at bottom of page.
If you use categories at Grades you will need to navigate to grades and edit the new grade item to be included in the appropriate category.
