Text Instructions for Features of MU Video

Adding New Media to MU Video

Upload Media:

  1. Click Add New Menu in upper right. Select Media Upload
  2. Click blue "+ Choose a file to upload" button
  3. Select a file from your directory and click Open
  4. Enter information about the media while you wait for the media to upload. Name, Description, and Tags are required fields in order to Publish Media. Recommended tags: creator name, instructor name, term and year, course name, assignment name.
  5. Click save. If you click Save before upload is complete, the media information is saved after the upload is complete.
  6. To view and/or edit the media details when upload is complete, click Go to Media.

Webcam Recording:

  1. Click Add New Menu in upper right. Select Webcam Recording.
  2. Click allow on popup Adobe Flash Player Settings
  3. Wait for Webcam window to show.
  4. Click anywhere inside the widow to start recording.
  5. A timer will display length of recording. Click anywhere inside window to pause or stop recording.
  6. Click red dot to record again without saving the previous recording. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until ready to save. Click Save.
  7. Enter details about the recording while you wait for the recording to upload. Name, Description, and Tags are required fields in order to Publish Media. Recommended tags: creator name, instructor name, term and year, course name, assignment name.
  8. Click Save.
  9. To view and/or edit the media details after saving, click Go to Media.

Video Presentation:

  1. You must add Media to your My Media page before you can select that Media for use in a Video Presentation.
  2. Click Add New menu in upper right. Select Video Presentation.
  • If you have not already uploaded a document
  1. Cick +upload Document button.
  2. Click Browse your Desktop button to locate a file on your computer. Supported formats are ppt/pptx, pdf, doc/docx, xls/xlsx. Your will be alerted that your file has been uploaded. We are now processing the document. Processing may take several minutes.
  3. Click blue link "Back to the Video presentation creation flow (step 1)"
  • After you have uploaded the document

Step 1. Select media by highlighting the desired media on the displayed list. Click Next button
Step 2. Select document by highlighting the desired document on the displayed list. Click Next button.
Step 3. Sync video and slidesA view window will display your document on the left and your video on the right. A toolbar at the bottom of the media window will contain buttons to add Sync markers, Remove those markers, Save those markers and control the media track while you edit the presentation. Mouse over the playhead to see all of the slides from the document you uploaded.

  1. Click "+Sync Video/Slide" to add a sync marker to the playhead for the media.
  2. Drag the sync marker to the point in the video where a slide should display.
  3. Click on the slide you wished displayed at that point in the video.
  4. Click the yellow Save button. A saved successfully message will appear.
  5. Repeat 1-4 until you have synced all the desired document slides to the video. You do not have to use all the slides from the document. You can use slides multiple times. Slides left unsynced will not display when the presentation is viewed. All slides will be available if you edit the presentation at later date.
  6. Edit the Details of the Presentation. Name and description fields are copied from the media you selected to make the presentation.
  7. Click the Save button at the bottom of the edit screen.
  8. Go to Media to play the finished presentation.

Understanding Private and Unlisted Settings for unpublished Media

Private:

  • Default setting for all media added to MU Video
  • Private media cannot be added to channels or categories
  • Media owners may access and share embed code for Media
  • Only Media owners may download the Media
  • No one can access the media from a link code except the owner
  • MU users and general public can view Media if they have permission to view a page where the media is embedded.
  • No one may locate the media using the "Search all media" feature inside MU Video

Unlisted:

  • Unlisted media cannot be added to channels or categories
  • Media owners may access and share link and embed codes for Media
  • MU users and general public may follow link to see Media
  • Once linked to Media, MU users and general public may download the Media Once linked to Media, general public viewers can access and share link to Media with others
  • Once linked to Media, MU viewers can access and share link and embed code for Media with other
  • No one may locate the media using the "Search all media" feature inside MU Video

Published:

  • The Publish menu option allows users to edit the status of a piece of Media between Private, Unlisted and Published.
  • Publishing means adding Media to Categories or Channels
  • Published media will allow MU users and general public users access to the media dependant upon the access restrictions of the Category (which by default are open to general public and all MU users) or Channel to which the media is published. All previous access restrictions determined by Private or Unlisted status will be removed.

Publishing options in MU Video

Users may only add media to Course Media Galleries from inside D2L. Users cannot publish media to Categories or Channels from inside D2L.
Categories:

  • Categories are created at the University level and are intended to hold media accessible to the general public. MU users cannot create categories.
  • Categories may contain sub-categories. Sub categories cannot be set to privacy options more open than those of the Categories they are nested within.

CHANNELS

Creating Channels

  1. Go to My Channels on your user menu.
  2. Click +Create Channel button
  3. Add Channel Name, Description and tags.
  • Please include an identifier, first initial last name, of the Channel Owner in the Channel name.
  • In addition to tags of your choosing, please include as many of the following tags as possible so users can locate your channel; semester and term, course name, assignment name, committee name, department name.
  1. Set privacy type for Channel (See chart for access details)
  2. Select desired options; Moderate content, enable comments in channel (on by default), enable subscriptions to channel.
  3. Assign the channel to one or more categories. You may need to scroll to see the full list of Categories and Subcategories. Channels do not have to be assigned to Categories. However assigning to appropriate Categories will make your Channel easier to find for users.
  4. Save

Adding Media to Channels (Content)

For an alternate way to add Media from My Media pages, see "Publishing"

  1. Go to My Channels on your user menu.
  2. Select desired Channel.
  3. Click +Add Media button.
  4. Check off all media you want to add the to the channel.
  5. Click +Publish button.
  6. NOTE: Description and Tag fields must be filled in to publish Media. If they are not filled in you will be prompted to Edit. Then repeat steps 3-5.

Moderate Content on a Channel:

Set content to be moderated on the Channel Details tab

  1. Go to the Channel
  2. If "0 Pending" then there is no Media awaiting approval.
  3. If "Browse Pending" then click to see Media awaiting approval.
  4. Review Media and then click Approve or Reject button.

Add Members to a Restricted or Private Channel

  1. Go to the Channel.
  2. Click "Actions" menu, then "Edit"
  3. Choose "Members" tab.
  4. Click "Add Member" button.
  5. Search for MU user and set permission for that user. If you begin typing the user name, suggested names will appear. Choose correct name. NOTE: Users must log into MU video at least once to activate their accounts before you can locat and add them as members. Only MU users may be added as members in MU Video. You may select different permissions for each individual user.
  6. Click Add button
  7. Repeat for each user you with to add as a member.

Edit Permissions of Members

  1. See "Adding Members to Restricted Channels".
  2. Locate user. Select pencil Edit icon in line with user name.
  3. Select permission level for that user.
  4. Click the square disc save changes icon.
  5. You may also delete the member from the channel by clicking the X icon in line with the user name.
  6. You may also reassign ownership of the channel from yourself to any other member by clicking "set as owner" in line with the user name.

PUBLISHING (Adding Media to Categories and Channels)

  1. Go to your My Media page.
  2. Select the Media you wish to Publish.
  3. Note: you may be prompted to edit the Media to fill in required fields before you can publish. These fields are "Description" and "Tags". Recommended Tags: creator name, instructor name, term and year, course name and number, assignment name.
  4. Click Publish from the Actions Menu.
  5. Check off every Category to which you want to publish your Media. All MU users may publish to Open categories. Only Category members may publish to Restricted or Private Categories. Media will show as "Published" and previous Private or Unlisted access limitations will be removed. Access will be determined by the individual Categories and Channels to which the media is published.
  6. Click "Publish to Channel" tab. Check off every Channel to which you want to publish your Media. All MU users may publish to Open Channels. Only Channel Contributors, Moderators and Managers may publish to Restricted and Private Channels.
  7. Click Save
  8. "Media successfully published" banner will display.

PLAYLISTS

Create a Playlist or Add Media to a Playlist

  1. Go to My Media on your user menu.
  2. Select a piece of media you would like on the playlist.
  3. Click the Actions Menu and the +Add to playlist.
  4. Check off each previously created playlist to which you want to add the media and/or enter name of New Playlist and click Add.

Manage Playlists

  1. Go to My Playlists on your user menu.
  2. Click on the name of the Playlist you want to manage from the list of Playlists on the left.
  • You may Reorder media on that playlist by dragging and dropping. Click Save Changes button.
  • You may Delete the Playlist. Media on the playlist is not deleted from MU Video when you delete the Playlist.
  • You may remove individual Media from the playlist by clicking the "X" in line with the media name. Click Save Changes button.
  • You may access the Embed code for the Playlist
  1. Click Embed button
  2. You will be given a popup message: Note that the embedded playlist will not display any media that is private or restricted. Are you sure you want to continue?
  3. Make selections for type, layout and color and then copy code.

Create Clip of Video

NOTE: Media owners must edit Media options to enable Clipping for individual pieces of Media. Media owners can make clips of their own media without enabling Clipping option.

  1. Go to the Media you want to clip.
  2. Select "Create Clip" from the Actions menu. If "Create Clip" does not appear, clipping has not been enabled for this Media by the Media owner.
  3. A Drag and drop the point marker to where the clip should start. Click "Set Starting Point" Button.
  4. Drag and drop the point marker to where the clip should end. Click "Set Ending Point" button.
  5. "Preview" button will display a player with the clip for you to play before saving.
  6. Repeat 3-5 until satisfied with the clip.
  7. Click Create Clip button.
  8. Edit Media details for the Clip.
    1. Default name for clips is (the name of the clip) – Clipped by (users making the clip). This name can be edited
    2. Default description for clips is a copy of the Media being clipped. It is recommended that users edit descriptions to include the purposes of the clip.
    3. All Clips are set to Private by default. To share clips with other users, please see permissions details on MU Video Quick Guide: Publishing.
  9. Click Save button.

Using "My Media" in D2L

"My Media" in D2L for INSTRUCTORS

Instructors may use My Media in three unique ways in D2L courses; Adding Media to you own My Media, embedding Media from My Media anywhere the text editor is used in a course and/or adding a Course Media Gallery Widget to the course homepage where enrolled students can view and/or share media for the course. There are numerous MU Video features that are not available when accessing My Media from within D2L.
Access and Add Media to MU Video while logged into a D2L course (Instructors and Students)

  1. Choose "My Media" from the Resource Menu in the black nav bar.
  2. Click Continue when asked if you would like to proceed.
  3. A new My Media window will open, displaying your previously added media, the Add New menu, and the Actions menu.
  4. Use the Add New options to add media

Embed Media from MU Video using Insert Stuff in the Text Editor

  1. Open the text editor
  2. Click "..." to see the full menu of options including "insert stuff".
  3. Click "insert stuff" button.
  4. Choose "My Media" from the insert stuff menu.
  5. Select the media you want to embed.
  6. Click Next button.
  7. Click Insert button
  8. Click Post, Publish or Save (depending on the tool).

Using the Course Media Gallery

NOTE: When viewing media in the Course Media Gallery, you will need to refresh your browser after viewing each piece of media to return to the full Gallery view.

  1. Create a Custom Homepage for your course
  2. (SEE Creating a Custom Homepage and Adding Widgets D2L Help Sheet)
  3. Add the "Course Media" Widget to your active custom homepage.

Adjust Media Gallery Restrictions

  1. Locate the Course Media Widget on your Course Homepage
  2. Click "Actions" menu and then "edit" from the upper right corner of the widget.
  3. Choose desired Options. Moderate options is off by default. Instructors must choose this setting if they want to approve media added by students before that media is visible to the class.NOTE: Instructors cannot disable student "Add Media" feature. However, selecting to "Moderate content" will block student's ability to see any media added to the gallery by other students.
  4. Click Save button.

Use the Actions Menu to Publish (multiple) Media to (multiple) Course Media Galleries at One Time (Instructors only)

Note: Instructors cannot create or view Channels or Playlists while accessing My Media from within D2L.

  1. Go to My Media from the Resource Menu.
  2. Check off each piece of Media that you would like to publish to the same Course Media Gallery.
  3. Click "Actions" menu and the "+Publish".
  4. A list of Galleries will appear for every course in which you are enrolled as an "Instructor". Check off each Gallery to which you would like your Media added.
  5. Click Save button.

Add Media to the Course Media Gallery (Instructors and Students)

  1. Find the Course Media Widget on your Course Homepage. Click "+Add Media" button. Both instructors and students add media to a course Media Gallery using the "+Add Media" button. Instructors may choose to Moderate media so that added media does not display until approved.
  2. Locate and check off the media you wish to add to the Course Gallery.
  3. Once published, previous Private or Unlisted access limitations will be removed. Access to your media will now be determined by the Category, Channel or Course Gallery to which it is published.
  4. Click "Publish button to add to Course Gallery.

Approve Media Added to the Course Media Gallery by Students

  1. In the Course Media Gallery, the Pending tab displays if there is media waiting to be approved. Click on Pending tab.
  2. Click on a thumbnail to view the media.
  3. Click Approve or Reject button next to individual pieces of media OR
    Click approve or reject at the top of the list to approve or reject ALL media at once.

"My Media" in D2L for STUDENTS

Users can access their MU Video Media directly from inside D2L courses. There are three unique ways that students may need to use My Media in D2L courses; Adding Media to your own My Media, Embedding Media from My Media to a Discussion in a course and/or adding Medial to a Course Media Gallery.

Access and Add Media to MU Video while logged into a D2L course

  1. Choose "My Media" from the Resource Menu in the black nav bar.
  2. Click Continue when asked if you would like to proceed.
  3. A new My Media window will open, displaying your previously added media, the Add New menu, and the Actions menu.

Add Media to the Course Media Gallery (on the course Homepage)

  1. Instructors may or may not add the Course Media widget to the homepage of individual courses. Instructors may use the Course Media Widget for different purposes. Verify with your instructor if you are or are not expected to add Media to the course Media Gallery.
  2. Find the Course Media Widget on your Course Homepage. Click +Add Media. NOTE: Both instructors and student add media to a course Media Gallery using the +Add Media button. Instructions may choose to Moderate media so that added media does not display until approved.
  3. Locate and check off the media you wish to add to the Course Gallery.
  4. Click +Publish button to add the media to the Course Gallery. Once published, previous Private or Unlisted access limitations will be removed. Access to your media will now be determined by the Category, Channel or Course Gallery to which it is published.
    NOTE: When viewing media in the Course Media Gallery, you will need to refresh your browser after viewing each piece of media to return to the full Gallery view.

Embed Media from MU Video into a Discussion Post using Insert Stuff

  1. Go to the correct Discussion in your course.
  2. Click "Start A New Thread" or "Reply" to open the text editor
  3. You may need to click "..." to see the full menu of options in the text editor toolbar.
  4. Click insert stuff button (cassette player command icon)
  5. Your list of previously added Media appears by default. You could choose a different source from the Insert Stuff Menu at this point.
  6. Select the media you want to embed in the Discussion post.
  7. Click Next button
  8. Click Insert button
  9. Click Post button to publish your Discussion post.
