Why do Microsoft Office documents open as read-only? How can I open them for editing?

With Office 2010, Microsoft added new security measures. By default, Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) opened from web sites—including D2L—open as read only to reduce the spread of Office macro viruses. There are no settings in Desire2Learn or your web browser that will change this behavior. However, there is a procedure that will allow you to open the documents for editing.

These instructions assume you have already logged in to D2L and entered the course in which you wish to work.

To open Office documents for editing:

  1. Click the link to the document in D2L.
  2. When your web browser prompts you to open or save the file, choose "save".
  3. Save the document to your computer in a location where you'll be able to find the file again.
  4. Open the file you just saved.
