I have AVG Anti-Virus installed on my computer, and Java won't run in my web browsers. How can I make AVG Anti-Virus let Java run?

Some versions of AVG, on some computers, do not work well with Java-based applications. If have AVG installed on your computer, and you experience trouble while attempting to use Java-based tools, you may try the workarounds below.

If Java Won't Start at All

If Java won't start at all on your AVG-protected computer, there are two possible fixes.

Option 1: Fully Disable AVG's Surf-Shield

This method will fully disable AVG's web browsing protections. It will allow Java to run, but at the same time, it makes your computer more vulnerable to Internet threats. Consider fully disabling AVG's Surf-Shield only when you need to run Java; then, re-enable Surf-Shield after you have finished using Java.

  1. On your computer, open the AVG Anti-Virus program.
  2. Within the AVG Anti-Virus program, open the web browsing settings.
  3. Different versions of AVG Anti-Virus offer different settings for Surf-Shield. Disable as many of the following as are available as settings in your version of AVG Anti-Virus:
    • Shield
    • Surf-Shield
    • LinkScanner Surf-Shield
    • Online Shield

To re-enable Surf-Shield, re-activate each of the Surf-Shield settings you previously disabled.

Option 2: Allow Exceptions to AVG's Surf-Shield

This method is not as reliable as the comprehensive method above. However, when this method works, it allows Java to pass through Surf-Shield while Surf-Shield continues to protect your computer from actual Internet threats.

  1. On your computer, open the AVG Anti-Virus program.
  2. Within the AVG Anti-Virus program, open the advanced settings.
  3. Select "Exceptions".
  4. Click the "Add exception" button.
  5. From the drop-down menu, select the option to add a web exception.
  6. Type a URL to except.
  7. Click the "OK" button to save the exception.
  8. Repeat steps to add additional exceptions as necessary.
  9. Click the "OK" button to save the advanced settings.

If Java Starts but then Stops While Loading Components

On some computers, AVG's Resident Shield, which protects your computer from viruses, mistakenly blocks Java from loading the components it needs to run Java applications. If AVG exhibits this problem on your computer, you'll need to temporarily disable Resident Shield each time you need to start a Java application.

Leaving Resident Shield disabled permanently would stop AVG from doing its job: protecting your computer from viruses.

Temporarily Disable AVG's Resident Shield

  1. On your computer, open the AVG Anti-Virus program.
  2. Within the AVG Anti-Virus program, open the advanced settings.
  3. Look for a "Temporarily disable AVG protection" settings page.
    • If you can locate a "Temporarily disable AVG protection" page:
      1. Select the "Temporarily disable AVG protection" settings page.
      2. Check the box for "Temporarily disable AVG protection".
      3. Click the "OK" button.
      4. In the window that opens, choose to disable AVG protection for 10 minutes.
      5. Click the "OK" button.
      6. Retry launching the Java application.
    • If you cannot locate a "Temporarily disable AVG protection" page:
      1. Close the advance settings window.
      2. Go to the Anti-Virus page in the AVG window.
      3. Uncheck the box for "Enable Resident Shield".
      4. Retry launching the Java application.
      5. After the Java tool has loaded, re-enable AVG's Resident Shield by re-checking the "Enable Resident Shield" box.
