How do I create extra credit grade items?

These instructions assume you have already logged in to D2L and entered the course in which you wish to work.

You may create a grades slot for either:

Extra credit that will be added to the final grade

  1. Click "Grades" in the navigation tool bar of your course,
  2. Click "Manage Grades" from the left hand menu.
  3. Create "New Item".
  4. Select "Numeric" as Grade Type
  5. Give item a "Name:"
  6. Specify "Max Points", number of extra credit points possible.
  7. Check off "can exceed" and "bonus" boxes. Do NOT check off "Exclude from Final Grade"
  8. Click "Save".
  9. A yellow star icon will appear in the instructors view of the slot on the Manage Grades page to indicate it as an extra credit item.

Extra credit that will be added to the total of a grade category

  1. Click "Grades" in the navigation tool bar of your course,
  2. Click "Manage Grades" from the left hand menu.
  3. Create "New Item"
  4. Select "Numeric" as Grade Type
  5. Designate which category you want the item to belong in from the "Category" dropdown options,
  6. OR click New Category to create the category if you have not already done so.
    1. Do NOT check off "Exclude from Final Grade" when creating new category
    2. If you want the extra credit to affect only the category, highest possible score in category = 100%, do NOT check off "Can Exceed"
    3. Check off "Can Exceed" if you would like the extra credit to potentially add points to the overall final grades for students who have more than 100% scores in the category.
  7. Specify "Max Points", number of extra credit points possible.
  8. Check off "can exceed" and "bonus" boxes. Do NOT check off "Exclude from Final Grade"
  9. Click "Save".
