How do I use a rubric to assess a discussion or assignment in D2L?

These instructions assume you have already logged in to D2L and entered the course in which you wish to work.

First go to the Rubrics tool.

Second create either an analytic or a holistic type rubric.

Third attach a rubric to an existing discussion or assignment.

Attach a Rubric to a Discussion

  1. Click "Communication"in the navigation bar.
  2. Select "Discussions" from the menu that opens.
  3. Locate the topic you would like associated with a grade item. Click the down arrow ( ) button next to the topic name.
  4. Select "Edit Topic" from the menu that opens.
  5. Click the "Assessment" tab from the four edit tabs that open.
  6. Click the "Add Rubric" button.
  7. Fill in the checkbox to the left of the appropriate rubric(s)
  8. Click "Add Selected" button.
  9. Click "Save and Close" button.

Note: D2L will not automatically transfer the score from a rubric to the discussion score field or an associated grade item score field.

Attach a Rubric to an Assignment

  1. Click "Assessment"in the navigation bar.
  2. Select "Assignments" from the menu that opens.
  3. Locate the assignment you would like associated with a grade item. Click the down arrow ( ) button next to the topic name.
  4. Select "Edit Assignment" from the menu that opens.
  5. Click "Evaluation & Feedback" in the right shaded panel to expand evaluation and feedback options.
  6. Click the down arrow ( ) button next to "Add Rubric".
  7. Select "Add Existing" to locate a rubric you have already created in D2L.
  8. Fill in the checkbox to the left of the appropriate rubric(s)
  9. Click "Add Selected" button.
  10. If you have selected more than one rubric set the "Default Scoring Rubric" dropdown to the desired rubric. When using this rubric for evaluation, D2L will automatically transfer the score achieved on the rubric to the assignment folder "Score" field and the score field of an associated grade item.
  11. Click "Save and Close" button.

Rubrics may also be attached to numeric type grade items, however if the rubric is used to assess a discussion or assignment it should be attached to that activity and NOT the grade item for that activity. You cannot associate an activity to any grade item to which a rubric has already been attached.
