How do I connect a course discussion, assignment or quiz to Grades?
Note: An activity can only be connected to a "Numeric" type grade item to which a rubric has not already been attached.
Associate a Discussion Topic to a Grade item
- Click "Communication"in the navigation bar.
- Select "Discussions" from the menu that opens.
- Locate the topic you would like associated with a grade item. Click the down arrow (
) button next to the topic name. - Select "Edit Topic" from the menu that opens.
- Click the "Assessment" tab from the four edit tabs that open.
- If you have already created the grade item at grades for the topic, choose that Grade Item from the dropdown options. Proceed to step 8.
- If you have not already created the grade item at grades for the topic, click New Grade Item in blue text to the right of the Grade Item dropdown. A New Grade Item creation pop up window will open
- On the pop up, enter a name for the new grade item
- If using Grade item categories choose the appropriate category for the new grade item.
- Enter the "Maximum Points" this discussion topic will be scored out of.
- If using a weighted grade book and not using D2L options to designate weights, enter the weight this discussion topic will be calculated towards the final grade.
- Click "Save" on the New Grade Item pop up window
- Enter the same value from the Grade item "Maximum points" field to the "Score Out Of" field
- (optional) Add a Rubric to be used when scoring the discussion topic.
- (optional) Fill in the checkbox to "Allow assessment of individual posts" and select a Calculation option if you want to give a score for each individual post a student makes to the topic.
- Click the "Save and Close" button.
Associate an Assignment to a Grade item
- Click "Assessment"in the navigation bar.
- Select "Assignments" from the menu that opens.
- Locate the assignment you would like associated with a grade item. Click the down arrow (
) button next to the topic name. - Select "Edit Assignment" from the menu that opens.
- If you have already created a grade item at grades for this Assignment skip to step 6. To create a new grade item for this assignment:
- Click into the "points" field
- Enter the points the assignment will be scored out of
- Click the down arrow (
) button next to "Not in Gradebook" - Click "Edit or Link to Existing"
- (optional) Click "Choose Grade Category" if you have previously created Grade Categories and want to nest the new grade item into one of those catgories.
- (optional) Click "Change Grade Type & Scheme" if you want to make the grade item for the assignment a "Selectbox" type (a dropdown of options based upon a Grade Scheme) rather than a Numeric type (a field to which you enter a numerical value).
- Click "OK" button when done with optional settings
- Click Save and Close. D2L will automatically create a new grade item for this assignment once you click save and close.
- If you have already created a grade item at Grades for this assignment:
- Click into the "points" field
- Enter the points the assignment will be scored out of
- Click the down arrow (
) button next to "Not in Gradebook" - Click "Edit or Link to Existing"
- Fill in the option to "Link to an existing grade item"
- Select the desired grade item from the drop down list of unassociated grade items
- Click the "OK button
- Click the "Save and Close" button.
Associate a Quiz to a Grade item
- Click "Assessment"in the navigation bar.
- Select "Quizzes" from the menu that opens.
- Locate the quiz you would like associated with a grade item. Click the down arrow (
) button next to the quiz name. - Select "Edit" from the menu that opens.
- Make note of the Total points value below the list of quiz questions.
- Click the "Assessment" tab from the six edit tabs that open.
- If you want D2L to automatically score the quiz (except for Written Response type questions) fill in the option to "Allow attempt to be set as graded immediately upon completion".
- If you have already created the grade item at grades for the topic, choose that Grade Item from the dropdown options.
- If you have not already created the grade item at grades for the topic, click New Grade Item in blue text to the right of the Grade Item dropdown. A New Grade Item creation pop up window will open
- On the pop up, enter a name for the new grade item
- If using Grade item categories choose the appropriate category for the new grade item.
- Enter the "Maximum Points" this quiz will be scored out of. (This point value should match the Total points below the quiz questions on the quizzes Properties tab).
- If using a weighted grade book and not using D2L options to designate weights, enter the weight this quiz will be calculated towards the final grade.
- Click "Save" on the New Grade Item pop up window
- If you would like published attempt scores for the quiz to be automatically entered at the grade item, fill in the checkbox to "Allow automatic export to grade".
- Click the "Save and Close" button.
