Many of you may have encountered an error (see screenshot below) recently when loading Cascade Server (https://cascade.millersville.edu) within a browser.

Security Error in Firefox

The following is an excerpt from the latest Information Technology Newsletter (PDF), IT Tech Talk:

Millersville University recently updated the "certificates" that confirm the identity of MU's web servers to Internet browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari, but most of those browsers have not yet been updated by their makers to trust the new certificates. If you want to avoid the nuisance of the error messages many users see in encountering this problem, you should first confirm that the site in question is indeed "Millersville.edu," then click "I Understand the Risks" and follow the instructions for adding the "Millersville.edu" to your browser's safe site list.

As the excerpt states, this security error is the result of a recent update to the security certificate on the server Cascade resides on. Don't be alarmed, Cascade itself is not broken or unavailable, you just need to add a security exception to load the application. Firefox is the main culprit as the error the browser displays looks awfully similar to the "Server Not Available" error message when a webpage is unavailable.

To add a security exception and continue loading Cascade:

  1. Go to https://cascade.millersville.edu
  2. Click on 'I Understand the Risks'
  3. Click 'Add an exception'
  4. A window will pop up to get a certificate, click 'Get Certificate'
  5. Click 'Confirm Security Exception'

Alternatively, you can follow these directions:

  1. Open web browser giving the "Insecure certificate" error.
  2. Enter or go to the following URL: http://certs.ipsca.com/store/IPS-IPSCABUNDLE.crt
  3. Check "Trust this CA to identify websites" and press OK (see screenshot below).
  4. Reload the webpage that had the certificate error.
