John Winthrop (1588-1649):
John Winthrop died on the 26th of March in 1649. England was embarking on a new experiment in republican government following the execution of Charles I. Winthrop was one of many New Englanders who hoped that the Puritan Revolution in their mother country would usher in a new modeled society based in large part on the colonial Puritan experiment. In the years that followed Oliver Cromwell (born in 1599 so that the 350th anniversary of Winthrop's death is the 400th year anniversary of his birth) would rely heavily on former new Englanders in his efforts to achieve the goal of creating a godly nation.
Coming as it does on the eve of a new millennium, 1999 presents an unusual opportunity to not only commemorate Winthrop, but to assess the state of our scholarly understanding of the two worlds of John Winthrop -- England and America in the late Tudor and early Stuart eras.
